Hello to Everyone. I’m Ms. Jane, the Early Intervention Counselor at Leo Kerner.
I want to welcome you to the 2014-15 school year. The new school year is always exciting. It can also bring on some stress. Parents worry about how their children will do. Kids worry about being away from home and if they are going to fit with the group. This is all very normal and will get better in time as they adjust to the changes.
Two ways that you can be helpful to your child and decrease stress is to be strong and be positive.
Being strong means sticking to the routine of getting up early enough and attending school daily. Bellyaches and headaches happen. Being strong and validating your child’s feelings is important. Also, reassuring your child that he/she can manage and you will work through this goes a long way. If you cave it makes it hard for your child to adapt.
Being positive means teaching about the importance of school and the valuable things he/she will learn while there. Negative words about school and the teacher reinforce that school is not a safe place. When challenges come, focus on handling these together and that everything is workable. As a result, your child will develop strong character.
If at anytime you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the main office and ask Mrs. Tammy for me. When we put our heads together, solutions always surface. I so look forward to getting to know all of you. I WISH YOU WELL.
